“The Congress manifesto includes LGBTQ rights and our party president feels strongly about it. The fact that it is in our manifesto means we will take it very seriously”, said Priya Dutt, the Congress candidate for Mumbai North Central constituency.
As people are heading towards the poll, the LGBTQ community seems to be gaining support as well. Congress candidate Priya Dutt met the LGBTQ community while campaigning in Mumbai. She extended her support to the LGBTQ community during her campaign. She also said that she would push for the formation of a dedicated cell for the community. The initiative taken by the Congress is a ray of hope for the LGBTQ community whose appeal for marriage and basic rights was recently dismissed by the court.
“I’m cool about queer rights and so are my kids. They know that it is a part of life and that it is okay. Rather than having a separate section or a focused group for the community in politics, it must be made a part of the mainstream”, she said. The Indian National Congress (INC) has added LGBTQ rights in their manifesto and strongly believes that a dedicated cell for the LGBTQ community is the need of the hour.
Indeed, it is the need of the hour. As said by Harish Iyer, an LGBTI activist, the people in the LGBTQ community are not homogeneous. They do not belong to a particular caste or background. These people come from various walks of life. The party already has a transgender working as the secretary in the Mahila Congress. With LGBTI activist Harish Iyer joining them, the party plans on taking the agenda forward.
This initiative taken by the Congress will open new opportunities to the growing LGBTQ community in India.
