Being a prominent LGBT activist, appearing on radio shows is a common affair for Harish Iyer. However, recently, when he was asked to jump into the RJ’s seat to narrate stories for a 2-hour show, he was anxious. “I didn’t know how it had to be done. I hadn’t anchored a show before,” said Iyer, 38. He took it up nevertheless – “I was fascinated with the idea of an LGBTQ show on radio, a one of its kind.”
Early this week, Ishq 104.8 FM launched Gaydio, which is said to be India’s first LGBTQ radio show.
This weekend show will act as a platform to bring out different voices from the community and spread the word about coming out of the closet fearlessly. It primarily aims at chronicling coming out stories and catering to both LGBT and non-LGBT audience. “Every show will feature one coming out story in a manner that interests the audience,” said an excited Iyer. “The emphasis is also on love being universal,” he added.
Gaining the correct tone, he said, was quite a task for him. “I didn’t know how it had to be done. I would go on the show like ‘Section 377 ke khilaaf hume khade hona hai (We have to stand against Section 377)’. I had to be tempered down from an activist’s tone for that of an RJ,” he said.
“We wanted to reach out to the LGBTQ community. Through Gaydio we wish to reinstitute the fact that love is not conditional to sexuality,” said Shivangini Jajoria, National Head of Ishq 104.8 FM.
