Kellogg’s Invented Corn Flakes To Stop People From Masturbating

For people all around the world, a bowl of corn-flakes is a go-to breakfast from decades. But if you get to know the actual intention behind the invention of corn-flakes, it will blow your mind. Cereal has quite an interesting beginning.

John Harvey Kellogg, who first created the cereal in the late 19th century, originally intended it to be “anti-masturbatory meal” which will reduce the people’s desire to pleasure themselves.

Back in the 1800s, Mr Kellogg was a physician and an anti-sex campaigner. He was very uncomfortable about sex, believing it was unhealthy for the body, mind and soul. He believed that the key to curing pleasure cravings was through a bland and “healthy” diet designed to “reduce such urges”.

He even wrote a book, “Plain Facts for Old and Young”, in which he described masturbation as “one of the vilest, the basest and the most degrading acts that a human being can commit”; one that even a “loathsome reptile, rolling in the slush and slime of its stagnant pool” wouldn’t dare undertake. He also wrote about natural history and hygiene of organic life, describing 39 symptoms which according to him caused by masturbation, such as mood swings, bad posture, a “fondness for spicy food” etc.

He was so adamant that sex of any kind was bad to physical, emotional and spiritual health that he never even had sex with his wife, he slept in a separate room from his wife. To avoid having to consummate his marriage, he adopted their four children and fostered 42 kids.

He believed that meat and rich or flavoured food increased sexual desire. He believed plainer food could help purify body and mind. He was working at Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan at that time and motivated by this thoughts, he created ‘Granula’, where oats and corns were baked and grounded into small pieces. But there was another company who was making the same product under the same name. Under the threat of legal consequences, Mr Kellogg changed the name of his product to ‘Granola’.

Next, Mr Kellogg made an enema machine, through which the intestines were cleaned out with water. According to the Daily Mail, “after flushing the bowels with water, he believed they would be further cleansed by administering a pint of yoghurt, halfway through the mouth and halfway through the anus.”

And then, finally, he created plain cereals, including corn flakes, which he believed would reduce the desire to masturbate.

Kellog knew he wouldn’t be able to ‘cure’ masturbation with just the diet alone, so, apart from corn flakes, he also came up with some other ‘cures’ for masturbation. For females, he suggested applying carbolic acid at clitoris to burn it. And for males, he recommended, inserting the silver wire through the foreskin to prevent erections and cause irritation.

He founded a company with his businessman brother, Will, to sell the cornflakes. But Will was concerned they were too bland to sell and suggested they add sugar to the recipe to make them more palatable. This resulted into a huge feud between the two brothers and they ended up separating over their culinary differences. Years later, Will started selling sugary corn flakes through his own company which later became Kellogg’s Company.
