The Art form of Drag is taking the world by storm and India is not too far behind. With amazing Drag artists like Rani-Ko-He-Nur, Maya The Drag Queen, Betta Naan Stop and many more, the Indian Drag Scene is booming and one unique artist among these is Lush Monsoon.
A Lawyer by day, a Drag performer by night, Ayushmaan from New Delhi, embraces the name “Lush Monsoon” when sets the stage on fire. His drag journey began after being inspired by RuPaul’s Drag Race and has performed at various venues in and around Delhi, since then.
“I discovered mainstream drag, while I was studying law at the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (NUJS) and started dabbling with it once I graduated, with my best friend, Kush (also a drag entertainer).
What started with the two of us playing with makeup in our rooms, became more serious business when I auditioned for Season 5 of “Reddit’s Lip-sync for you Life” competition. After a grueling ten weeks of competition, I finished as the first runner up of the season. The admiration and support which I received during the competition gave me the courage to pursue this publicly in India.
The art of drag has come to mean so much to me since then because it’s one of the few spaces where I feel I truly belong. Coming from a small town from India (Ranchi, Jharkhand), I had repressed myself for years in the fear of social stigmatization. Drag has helped me to be myself, in front of the world and has pushed me out of my closet. I now wish to share the same message with every queer person, especially in India, who feels alienated and is too scared to be themselves.” says Lush in an interview with FSOG.
