Hello hello! Are you ready for some intel that will make you jump with excitement and maybe even block months on your calendar? We have some “Thank you gay lords” worthy news! Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci will be playing a gay couple in an upcoming movie.
The cinema industry is booming, and so are TV series. LGBT+ characters and stories are entering mainstream media. Better representation, more diversity and normalising LGBT+ as a part of the whole. Thanks to media representation, we have been able to educate masses and open up issues related to the LGBTQ+ community.
Let’s get Candid.
Colin Firth has had our eyes set on him ever since Pride and Prejudice. He gave us Shakespeare in Love, Bridget Jones Diary, and oh my god, how can I forget, Mamma Mia! Colin Firth has blown minds and captured hearts for a long time now. But we have seen him playing straight roles. So with this movie, I could probably freely say that he’s serving the gay community. And the community appreciates him more than he thinks.
Stanley Tucci is a remarkable actor who we witnessed in The King’s man, Burlesque, The Terminal, and Devil wears the Prada. He has worked alongside the biggest names in the industry and risen to the top with his kicker acting skills. From Cher to Meryl Streep, he’s worked with them all. His most recent movies were the horror movie, The Silence, and the upcoming movie, Limetown alongside Jessica Biel.
So what worldly phenomena brought these two amazing stars to work together and play a loving gay couple?
Supernova. Yes, that’s the name of the movie that foresaw the actors as a gay couple. And the excitement around it is pretty darn high. Queerty confirmed that the movie was infact, not a space movie.
Variety says, “Supernova centers on Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci), partners of 20 years, who are traveling across England in their old RV visiting friends, family and places from their past. Since Tusker was diagnosed with early-onset dementia two years ago, their time together is the most important thing they have.”
Yesss, we love road-trip love stories. The roads bring you obstacles you cannot predict and it is the best way to bond. The craziest things are bound to happen. Elderly LGBT+ representation has been put on the back burner probably because of the usual target audience. But with Firth and Tucci in the frame, it’s bound to grab some eyeballs. To top that off, the much-needed discussion of mental health is introduced to the narrative. Supernova seems to serve a pretty wholesome platter for us to enjoy.
Variety reported that Actor Harry Macqueen has written and directed the film. This is his sophomore feature after 2014’s Hinterland. “Supernova is a deeply romantic, modern love story,” Macqueen told Variety.
Firth and Tucci have come together in movies twice before. So, Supernova was their reunion on the film screen. The duet has shared the screen in the movies Conspiracy and Gambit.
Twitter blew up as soon as the news out! Many people showed their support and gleamed with excitement about watching Firth and Tucci being cute and lovey with each other. The support came from the LGBT+ community as well.

Is it Fair?
Yup, neither of the actors are gay. The community is all for representation, but we’d prefer it if we had someone from the community told the story of a gay couple. No doubt both the actors are exceptional and will in all likelihood justify the role. But why don’t we have gay actors playing the same roles? With the talented crew that Supernova has, it is pretty sad to see no LGBT+ cast in the gay movie.
And it isn’t like we are short of actors to play the roles, Hollywood has an array of actors who could have replaced Firth and Tucci in the movie. So why exactly are we excited? Why do our expectations change or take the back seat if we have popular stars ruling the screen?
Recently, the extremely talented Billy Porter took up the role of a fairy godmother in the reimagined telling of Cinderella. He is a gay black man.
Many have pointed out that this is a pro-LGBT+ move, but it is unfair to the tale and a hypocritical move. We backed up Billy Porter and celebrated the casting.
So what is that we really want? Where do we draw the line? And who gets to represent what?
The LGBTQ+ community is known to be respectful towards everyone. A majority of the community is environmentally aware, vegan, and fight for equal rights in every aspect. But are we getting hypocritical or are we simply asking for what we deserve?
