Former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade recently talked about his trans daughter Zaya. In an interview with Ellen Degeneres on her show, he expressed unwavering support for his children through all situations and circumstances.
Dwyane Wade’s interview with Ellen
In the interview with Ellen, Wade opened up about the whole situation and said that he was proud of his 12-year-old daughter. He said, “We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we’re proud allies as well. And we take our roles and our responsibilities as parents very seriously. When our child comes home with a question, when our child comes home with an issue, when our child comes home with anything, it’s our job to listen and give them the best information, the best feedback that we can, and that doesn’t change because sexuality is now involved in it”.
He further added, “Zion, born as a boy, came home and said, ‘Hey, so I want to talk to you guys. I think going forward I am ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as ‘she’ and ‘her.’ I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.'” Following this, Wade talked about parenting and stated, “We’re just trying to figure out as much information as we can to make sure that we give our child the best opportunity to be her best self.”
Wade also admitted that he had been ignorant about these issues in the past. He further expressed his desire to learn more about the community and stated that he will be more open-minded. Ellen Degeneres addressed Dwyane Wade’s decision, praised him and said, “There are so many parents who just [say] ‘Oh, you’re not going the way I imagined or wanted you to be’ and freak out. You’re so loving and supportive of Zaya and what a special child she is.”
50 Cent chimes in with a meme
As expected, a lot of celebrities and trolls felt like they HAD to offer their input on the whole situation. Popular rapper, 50 Cent shared a particularly crude meme about Wade’s daughter on Instagram. The meme included a picture of Dwyane Wade and R&B singer R. Kelly (who has since been incarcerated for child sex abuse and other charges) sitting at a 2015 New York Fashion Week show. The meme also included speech bubbles over both their heads which indicated an imaginary conversation between the two. Kelly’s bubble read, “Heard you [have] a daughter now.” and Wade’s bubble read, “[You] touch her, I’ll kill ya”. 50 Cent had also included the caption “LOL NOW THIS SOME FUNNY S**T”. The post has since been deleted.
Though 50 Cent’s post did get around 360,000 likes, a lot of people criticized the rapper for the meme. One such person wrote, “This [is] not funny”. Another user’s comment read, “The fact that so many people think this post is funny is actually sickening. S**t like this is what drives KIDS into depression or even committing suicide. 50, your son doesn’t even like you which says a lot about your relationship with your child‼”. A third person wrote, “I’m certain 50 wouldn’t want anyone commenting on his son or family. Time to grow up.”
Negative responses from other celebrities
Rapper Young Thug took to Twitter to comment on the whole thing and wrote,
All I wanna say to dwade son is
“GOD DONT MAKE MISTAKES”
but hey live your true self
The tweet met with harsh criticism from a lot of twitter users for the transphobic tone it contained. Young Thug wasn’t the only rapper to chime in either.
Baton Rouge MC Boosie BadAzz took it to the next level by posting a highly transphobic video of himself giving “advice” to Wade. In the video, Boosie goes on a rant about Wade’s parenting. “I gotta say something about this s**t, bruh,” Boosie begins and then escalates the whole situation with, “Don’t cut his d–k off, bruh. Like, bruh, for real, if he gonna be gay, let him be gay. But don’t cut his d–k off, bruh. Don’t dress him as a woman, dawg. He’s 12 years old. He’s not up there yet. He hasn’t made his final decisions yet. Don’t cut his f—ing d–k off, Dwyane Wade”. Boosie ended his rant by asking users to not address Zaya as a woman and stated that she has not made her “final decision” yet.
The positive thing that one can take away from the whole situation is the support that Zaya has received from all over and the amazing way in which Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have stood by their daughter’s side and helped sift through all the negativity.
