Ellen DeGeneres is the queer icon who built her global brand solely based on the “be kind” motto. In front of the camera, Ellen did many acts of charity and lavishly generous giveaways. But behind the camera however, former and present employees on this top daytime show said they endured racism, intimidation and fear.
“That ‘be kind’ bullshit only happens when the cameras are on. It’s all just show,” told a former employee to BuzzFeed News. “I know they give money to people and help them out, but it’s for show.”
As a result, Ellen DeGeneres apologized to all her employees for failing to take better care of the work culture.
A Toxic Work Culture:
BuzzFeed News reported that they spoke to ten former employees and one present employee on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show. These employees revealed the reasons they got fired was taking medical leaves or bereavement days for attending family funerals. One employee, who claimed she was fed up with the toxic comments regarding her race; ultimately walked off the job. Others also revealed that their direct managers instructed them to not speak with DeGeneres. Even if they saw her around the workplace.
The former employees have blamed the executive producers and senior managers for this everyday toxic culture at work. However, one of the former employees told that, in the end, it’s Ellen’s name on this show. And that “she really needs to take more responsibility” for her show’s workplace environment.
“If she wants to have her own show and have her name on the show title; she needs to be more involved to see what’s going on,” one former employee added. “I think the executive producers surround her and tell her, ‘Things are going great, everybody’s happy,’ and she just believes that; but it’s her responsibility to go beyond that.”
Netizens Agree Ellen’s Responsible For This:
Also, people on social media seem to agree that it should be Ellen’s responsibility to look after her workplace.
One such online user wrote: “Anyone with office experience knows the culture and climate is established at the top. @TheEllenShow is no different. Ellen Degeneres is responsible for any sexist, racist, demeaning and intimidating behavior at her show. And she contributes to it all.”
Another netizen wrote on twitter: “@TheEllenShow pretending she had no idea this toxic environment existed on her own show is ridiculous. Workplace culture starts at the top- at best she shows no leadership, at worst she enabled this behavior it continues; her employees taking the fall for her to fake ignorance.”
Not much of an apology from @TheEllenShow ‘people’ have been getting away with murder? Where is the self reflection and taking responsibility for your own actions? It’s not like your treatment of others hasn’t been known for a long time. The show Ellen is not the real Ellen…

Furthermore these multiple testimonies have given an allegedly damning image to this day time talk show host and it’s senior production executives. As a result it has led some netizens to question the future existence of this show.
looks like it's time to cancel @TheEllenShow 🤷🏻♂️
it's a bummer tho bc i know how many people have looked up to her over the years. i was one of those people.
BUT when you're a shitty person, you eventually get what you deserve.

Ellen DeGeneres Apologises Profusely:
Ellen DeGeneres sent her apologies to the staff of her talk show, over an email; on Thursday. This was a week after Warner Bros Television notified the employees; that it’s parent company will conduct a thorough investigation, into the toxic work culture.
This email was reviewed by The New York Times. DeGeneres wrote that: “On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness; and no one would ever raise their voice and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that is not the case. And for that, I am sorry.”
“As we’ve grown exponentially,” she wrote, “I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t. That will now change, and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.”
Ellen is one of the few television stars to come out as gay, back in 1997. She announced that she is gay in a statement; when she acted as the star “Ellen”, a prime time sitcom. However, DeGeneres tried to reassure her employees that their workplace will be improved; by invoking her personal experiences.
“As someone who was judged and nearly lost everything for just being who I am,” she wrote, “I truly understand and have deep compassion for those being looked at differently; or treated unfairly, not equal, or — worse — disregarded. To think that any one of you felt that way is awful to me.”
