World’s First Openly Gay Indian Prince Calls For A Ban On Conversion Therapy

The Indian government is facing an extended resentment from its LGBTQ+ community; because of their continuous use of conversion therapies to “fix” homosexual people. As we all are already aware, a homosexual person is subjected to conversion therapy, in false beliefs of “changing” their sexual orientation into heterosexual.

The suicide of the 21 year old bisexual woman, Anjana Harish, in May – ignited several virtual protests. Harish decided to end her own life in Goa, and posted a video on social media before she committed suicide. In this video Harish described how she endured the haunting experience called conversion therapy in Kerala; because of her conservative parents. Her death lead to strengthening the efforts by many activists; to put an end to this outdated, impractical and terrifying practice.

Recently, the first openly gay prince of the world – Manvendra Singh Gohil from India is the latest addition to these strong voices; as he also wants laws that criminalize conversion therapy.

Manvendra Was A Victim Too:

“I was myself a victim of conversion therapy,” he told in a conversation with the Forbes. “From my parents. When I came out, the first thing they tried to do was convert me. They wouldn’t accept me as a gay child and tried to ask the doctors to operate on me. They took me to religious leaders to ask them to cure me.”

This traumatic practice subjects several vulnerable people of the community to different cruel tortures such as, shock treatments.

They also make vows and continuously fail, to “fix” people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and all various other romantic, gender and sexual spectrums.

Sadly enough, out of the many countries in the world where conversion therapy is a hundred percent legal – India is one among them. Only five countries in this entire world have made conversion therapy illegal.

But the Prince is now calling for such centres to be banned in India and all around the world.

The son of the Maharaja of Rajpipla in Gujarat said that it is usually worse for women from the community; in conversion therapy centres:

“Lesbians are treated so badly, I’ve known cases where the family member with rape the child to prove she can have sex with a man. ‘That proves you are heterosexual.’ Indian parents are fearful of [people in] society, relatives, neighbours. I always say, [LGBT people] coming out to their parents is easier, than parents coming out about [having LGBT children] to the rest of the world.”, added the Prince.

Gas Chambers But For LGBTQ Community:

Amar Singh, another Indian Royal has paid a visit to some of these centres that provide “curing” therapies:

“I have visited dozens in India, and spoken to people running them. I have held men young and old in my arms, crying, after they’ve been kicked out of their houses,” Amar Singh told in a conversation with Forbes.

Speaking about such practices, where they dump fruit to beating up the community people to “cure” them; Singh shared about other similar tortures as well.

This Indian Royal likes to call these centres as ‘gas chambers,’; referring to the cold Nazi murdering of several Jewish people during the World War; and many people who are LGBTQ in the holocaust. He did this since, they make false claims for possessing ways and methods to rid the world off the community individuals.

“They are fronts for unethical practices. You’re told if you are not cured, and you go back to your father – he will kill you.”

Amar Singh, is a Harvard graduate and has been on the Forbes 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs list; whose gallery champions female artists.

This Is A Global Fight:

The fight to ban LGBT conversion therapy centres is fastly growing into a global focus point; in all those nations who have successfully attained anti-discrimination, adoption and equal marriage rights for the LGBTQIA+.

As this worldwide movement to put an to conversion therapy grows day by day; Boris Johnson, the prime minister of UK, has promised his complete commitment to ban them. This was however, after his political party faced criticism for prolonging this matter; since they announced their plans to criminalize such practices two years ago.

“Gay conversion therapy is absolutely abhorrent, and it has no place in a civilised society and has no place in this country,” Johnson told. He also added that he would definitely devise plans to ban it, once their government has conducted a detailed study first.
