1. The Way He Looks
This is a Brazilian coming of age 2014 movie. The Way He Looks is a story which follows a blind high school student Leo, and a new student at school, Gabriel. Giovana, who is Leo’s best buddy is interested in Gabriel; however Gabriel and Leo slowly get closer to each other. The Way He Looks bagged the Teddy Award for the best LGBT-themed feature. Also the FIPRESCI Prize for the best Panorama feature. This movie also hold a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
This Netherlands movie, Jongens, translated as Boys, is a 2014 flick. The story follows a fifteen year old boy, Sieger who lives with his brother and widowed father. At a national championship relay, Sieger along with two others Tom and Marc were chosen; to represent their local athletic team. Marc and Sieger kick start a secret relationship, while Sieger keeps on insisting he’s not homosexual. Over the course of this movie, Sieger finally learns to come in terms with his sexual orientation.
With a high score of ninety five percentile on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie is a critically acclaimed and award winning flick. Roger Ebert also called this movie as “a smart, sensitive, perceptive film.” The story if this movie revolves around Glen and Russell when they decide to begin a sexual relationship. While, Glen plans to leave the nation in a week.
4. ‘God’s Own Country’ (Directed by Francis Lee)
Hating to be vulnerable, Johnny (Josh O’Connor) is a hard man on the outside. But, taking care of his ailing father and his family’s farm seems to be finally taking a toll on him emotionally. However, the arrival of this Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu), shakes up Johnny’s life from its core. Gheorghe’s only job is to lend a helping hand to Johnny. Although Johnny sometimes sleeps around with other men, he can always discard them very easily. But this is not same case, when it comes to Johnny. Gheorghe represents for Johnny, the complexity of masculinity; that it need not be defined using hardness, power and meanness. Masculinity could be soft, gentle, caring, tender and compassionate as well. This is how director Francis Lee approached the film. The movie is very tactile and textural in its emotional and sexual content.
5. Big Eden
This movie is a romantic comedy tale which follows Henry Hart, who is a successful gay artist in New York. He however returns to his rural hometown, Montana, to take care of his grandfather. Henry is then forced to confront his unresolved feelings for his high school buddy Dean. While being totally oblivious to Pike’s feelings for him. This movie has bagged several awards at various LGBT film festivals. The list includes Outfest, San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, and Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.
6. North Sea Texas
North Sea Texas is a Flemish drama which follows Pim a teenager boy who lives with his troubled mom. He also happens to fall in love with his best buddy Gino. It’s a 2011 coming-of-age movie. This film received many positive critical reviews; and also acquired an 81 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
7. Rag Tag
This British-Nigerian drama had premiered at the 2006 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival. The movie revolves around two childhood buddies, Raymond (known as Rag among his friends) and Tagbo (or Tag for short). These two are reunited once again, after losing touch for many years; and decide to take their relationship to the next level.
8. Pit Stop
Pit Stop is a 2013 American film which follows two homosexual men from a small town in Texas. They start to build a relationship through their conversations at the local gas station. Pit Stop has won the Texas Grand Jury Prize at the 2013 Dallas International Film Festival.
Beginners is a 2010 romantic comedy-drama that revolves Oliver; who is currently reflecting on the life and death of his da Hal. The movie is based on the real life coming out story of writer and director Mike Mills’ father at the age of 75. This flick is full of flashbacks of recently out Hal experiencing his life as an openly gay man; and at the same time enjoying and exploring his relationship with Andy, his much younger lover.
