The incredibly popular YouTuber influencer who discusses makeup and glamour. But he is better known for his quip with Tati Westbrooke which broke out big and their followers were almost forced to pick a side. The two went back and forth and seemingly, still, haven’t stopped. But is James Charles is up in arms? All over again?
So back in May, Westbrook and Charles had an extremely public fall out. The makeup influencers have millions of followers together and them tearing each other apart went viral! Even those who did not who Charles and Westbrook now learnt about it.
Westbrook, the 37-year-old posted a 43-minute long video where she spilled the beans on her protégé. The video was a response to Charles’ video where he promoted a hair vitamin. The hair vitamin belonged to Westbrook’s rival company.
Westbrook obviously had to bring it to notice. The heartbroken makeup guru accused Charles of being disloyal. She also went onto call him ego-driven and said he used her to get closer to his ambitions. What stood out of her list of accusations was the 19-year-old influencer’s usage of fame to hit on straight men and convince them to have sex with him.
And James Charles seemed to have a reply ready in place. He told his followers that he was hurt. And he also went onto apologise to Westbrook for any pain he had caused.
But as far as the accusations go, he refuted them all. In the video, he said,
“I have never, and would never, and will never use my ‘fame’, money or power, to manipulate or get any sexual actions from a guy. That is disgusting, it is not me, and the fact that Tati brought this up blows my mind, because she knows the real story.”
But this story is pretty old. James Charles lost approximately 3 million followers soon after Westbrook’s video. And after Charles’ response videos, Westbrook took down her video.
So when the two almost had a clean slate and a fresh beginning, why did James Charles decide to tug at the roots again?
The Paper Magazine
Charles’ interview with the Paper magazine revealed his struggles with mental health since the debacle. He also commented on Westbrook’s hurtful accusations about his sex life, calling it “disgusting”. He also said her comments were hurtful to the LGBT+ community. In the interview, he said,
“What that statement implies is that gay men are all predatory, which is disgusting, not true and very dangerous to put out there,”
“The whole situation was scary for the LGBTQ+ community and paints a really bad picture of gay men.”
So what was Westbrook referring to? Really? James said that Westbrook was speaking of an incident where the individual involved identified as a bisexual.
“The reality is that the “hook-up” that was being discussed was completely consensual. It was with a boy who told me that he was bisexual and later on told the world he was bisexual. Therefore there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Charles said that the strain of the episode between Westbrook and himself still impacts him. And his mental state has been affected by it.
“I’m not mentally in a place where I want to be. What’s even harder to swallow is that it’s been six months since all the drama happened. I thought by this time I’d be completely good — back to normal, if you will — and that’s not the case.”
Careful And Lonely
Now that he has experienced a breakup between friends and backlash from his followers, James Charles really seems to have mellowed out. He is being far more careful with himself and his behaviour around people. He says that he is cautious and wary when it comes to romantic involvement. And says that he feels distrustful and is hyper-alert for red flags.
“I’ve gotten really good at seeing those early on. You just never know what people’s true intentions are.
Leading a public life makes you attentive to people who walk up to you. You pay heed to the things you say and do. And that makes the interactions pressurised to say the least. And it is no different for James. He too seems to be taking a hit.
“With my job, there are so many blessings but a lot of people see them as an opportunity for themselves to either come up, get financial gain, get followers or attention or take me down with them, which has been attempted. I’m just careful … and lonely.”
Oh well, at least this time James Charles is away from a back and forth and seems to be far more collected than usual. We hope the protégé and Westbrook can finally see eye to eye and bring this deal to end. And if not, they could once and for all clear the air and go their way.
