You better start saving up for an LGBT- friendly retirement plan for your golden years. Granted the world is becoming a more inclusive and accepting place but we still have a long way to go. So till we get there, here are some options for LGBT friendly cities for your retirement.
Los Angeles has been named one of the top 20 cities for LGBT-friendly retirement in the United States in 2018, according to SeniorAdvice.com.
Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) reports that there are an estimated three million LGBT people age 55 and over living in the United States with estimates expected to increase.
SeniorAdvice.com used its rating system, called SeniorScore, that judges cities based on their health and safety, recreation and leisure, finances and general quality of life. It also determined cities’ LGBT population, the existence of an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, gay-friendly senior communities, weather, health care and more.
Los Angeles is listed for its just over 4.5 percent LGBT population, Los Angeles LGBT Center and more than 650 senior living facilities including Triangle Square Senior Apartments in Hollywood, the largest affordable housing development for LGBT seniors.
“When I reach the time of going into a care home, I need to know that all the staff and residents know about my partner, Ann, and my entire life history,” says the 72- year-old, Sue Lister.
“I’m not going to put up with any kind of prejudice or discrimination, and I’m not prepared to wait 10 or 20 years [until] the younger generation, which is far more open-minded, is older.”
So if you are ever thinking of where you’d like to grow old while having the liberty and luxury to be your fabulous self, you know where to go.
