Two men teaching at a public school in Spain, showed up on May 2nd, 2021, wearing skirts to school for a very heartening reason. This episode is part of a larger movement #LaRopaNoTieneGénero, which is nothing but #ClothesHaveNoGender in English.
Read on to find out what fired up this movement.
The school removed Mikel Gómez from school for wearing a skirt:
In a viral TikTok video, the 15 year old Mikel explained that he decided to wear a skirt to school in order to challenge the gender norms. And also to show his support for women’s liberation. However, they immediately pulled Mikel out of class and escorted him to a psychologist. This psychologist grilled him to find out if he identified as a female.
Mikel has seen boys in other nations flaunting skirts to support gender equality and he wanted to express his support as well. But when the school authorities pulled him out of the class; he questioned why none of his female classmates were treated the same way for wearing skirts.
Ever since, he posted several Tiktoks where he spoke about the ways in which clothing is attached to sexuality & gender. However, on November 4th, many male students across the nation showed up to school wearing skirts as well. This was a part of the already existing, bigger movement – #LaRopaNoTieneGénero.
Mathematics teacher wore a skirt to show his support:
A mathematics teacher, Jose Piñas, decided to follow Mikel’s example. He wore a skirt to school as well.
“20 years ago I suffered persecution and insults for my sexual orientation in the institute where I am now a teacher,” he wrote on social media.
“Many teachers, they looked the other way. I want to join the cause of the student, Mikel, who was expelled and sent to the psychologist; for going to class with a skirt.”
Hace 20años sufrí persecución e insultos xmi orientación sexual en el instituto en el q ahora soy profesor, muchs profes, miraron para otro lado. Many more teachers decided to take up the cause. Because of which the movement gained more pace. Among these teachers are Manuel Ortega and Borja Velúquez. They teach at a primary school in Valladolid, the Virgen de Sacedón.
As reported by El Pais, these men decided to flaunt skirts for the whole of month May. Since they wanted to extend support to one of their students; who endured bullying through homophobic insults.
“A school that educates with respect, diversity, co-education and tolerance,” tweeted Velúquez, asking others to take part as well. “Dress how you want! We join the campaign #clotheshavenogender.”
Students will now wear skirts on the 4th of every month:
In the meantime, male and female students belonging to a bunch of high schools in Galicia have promised to wear skirts; on the 4th day of every month for a total of six months to shine light on this cause.
“After the first protest we thought we were too small,” told organiser Lía Menduíña Otero to Público. “That could not be forgotten and we had to continue.
“They always tell us about the need to learn math, history, language,” she added, “but not about something as important as equality.”
