How Much Should Gay Porn Performers Be Getting Paid?

Porn is an evergreen industry. Sex is the biggest conversation stirrer and is yet constantly kept under wraps. Which makes it that much more exciting. That’s why porn will never die. And a significant part of the porn industry is gay porn. Even though it is only a fraction, gay porn is pretty popular. So why are porn performers getting paid in peanuts?

The performers have complained about how the finances are planned out in the backend. And apart from the few who fled, those who still work under studios are calling for a change in the terms of their rates.

Joey Mills Tweet

Joey Mills tweeted on Monday, “As performers can we go ahead and say that no one who is performing for a studio should be getting paid any less than 1k a scene.” Mills is a performer who works with popular sites like Men.com and Helix Studios.

He added, “I hear about some of these new models’ scene rates and how multiple well-known studios are knowingly taking advantage of young performers.” A movie he featured in, Vegas Nights which was produced by the Helix Studios has grabbed trophies left, right, and center at award shows!

Pay attention to the numbers folks, Mills unravels how to get what you quote instead of letting the studio have complete power over you.

“If you’re a performer making less than 1k, this isn’t me coming after you in any way, I just want everyone to realize what your worth is] instead of letting your studio decide for you.”

Speaking the Truth

After he said he piece, many performers reverted with their pay and experiences. A performer who worked for Boycrush in the past said that he was paid between $400-500. Another said he was paid even lesser.

And guess who shared experience? Nic Sahara.

He said,

“When I started out I was making $500 per scene, now that I am more experienced, I feel like a model should make no less than 1k.”

Owen Hawk, another performer told that he was paid $300 almost 17 years ago, in 2003. This was a film for Titan and this was in addition to the airfare. And why did he take it?

“I took it [because] I was trying to break into the industry, which was hard back then living on the East Coast, 17 years later still going and I don’t regret taking that pay for the opportunities it brought.”

What is Too Much Money?

Let’s try and put things in perspective. How much should a porn performer earn? Similar to TV series and movies, porn films also run for a really long time. If not decades together, people stream and watch it for years together. And the company is making a steep amount of money for how much they invest. And as the stars of the film, the performers should get paid better. $300 per scene might seem like too much, but if you look at the whole picture, you know that the companies are mooching off of the stars and the stars deserve more.

Sadly, the prices are worse in many other countries. Even in U.K. the porn performers get paid very little. According to Mickey Taylor, the average U.K model makes as little as $50 per scene. And Alex Roman added that this problem does not limit itself to the U.K, but extends to the whole of Europe.

The Fan Site for Porn Performers

A lot of porn performers use their studio work to market and promote their fan-site. The reason for this is that the performer is guaranteed a monthly cheque as long as people are subscribing to their fansite. And this is why many flee the studio scene once they break into the industry and begin their fan sites.

But if the studios must be brought back into track and be forced to pay the performers the money they deserve, Mills angles at just one thing. If all the performers collectively set a floor, a base price, which according to Mills should be $1000. If all the performers agreed to stick to the price and not budge, the studios will be compelled to raise their offers.

As Ty Mitchell points out, “One of the most common predatory tactics studios use is insisting they’re easy and take less time, You’re not being paid for just your time, you’re being paid for the rights to use, edit, distribute, and monetize images of you.”

And in a tweet that came a little later, this is what he said. “Labor organizing is often best when it’s between workers face to face. One of the best parts of this past month was having candid conversations with performers about studios, pay, work conditions. Use your JFF/OF dates to have these discussions!”

Performing porn is a lot of difficult work. It is not only physically straining, but also requires you to be mentally and emotionally stable. So that they do not emotionally invest in something so personal. Have you ever wondered how much your country’s porn performers get paid?
