As the month of pride arrives, the LGBTQ+ community start to celebrate their annual gay pride movement. A movement that started in 1969 to honor the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. A month long series of event from parades, picnics, concerts, parties, workshops held by and for the community. And when this is the case, can fashion take a back step during the month? And Ralph Lauren is not one to back down either. The fashion label launched their new line of Capsule Collection. The collection features their signature Polo pony with rainbow colors.
Lets get to know more about the Stonewall community.
Let us go back in time, and remember the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. This was a huge turning point for the gay liberation movement in the United States Of America. As a result many organizations started building communities to offer their support and feel included. On such organization was The Stonewall Community Foundation. To honor the uprising at the Stonewall Inn, this foundation was started. Even though they have no formal affiliation with the same. The Stonewall Community gathers funds and raising money through various platforms to make a difference to issues like education, family acceptance, health and more.
Fashion contributes to a major part of a community.
The time of the month when the town isn’t only painted red but is filled with all the colors of the rainbow. The pride month celebrates its 50th anniversary with annual day parades, parties, concerts. Many individuals from the LGBTQ attend these events and workshops. The main purpose of these events its to commemorate the impact the lesbians, gays, transgender, bisexuals had on history locally and internationally. It is probably one of the most colorful and cheerful month of the year that brings together so many individuals.
This year Ralph Lauren decided to help raise money for The Stonewall Community Foundation that supports many LGBTQ+ organizations. They did so by launching a new collection of apparels called the Capsule Collection. Ralph Laurens signature polo pony covered in rainbow stripes is what the line featured. T-shirts, hoodies, polo T-shirts, hats and bags are a part of the collection. The site also offers for customizable apparels where you can add a personal touch to your wardrobe. The collection is inspired by the LGBTQ community and it also supports it. Sale made by the purchase of T-shirts contributes 100 percent to the Stonewall Community Foundation in the form of donations. Fifty percent of the purchase price from the sale of each product will be donated to Stonewall Community Foundation.

Individuals from the LGBTQ community shot the campaign. Cass Bird , who is a lesbian photographer who shot various models and other influential people from the queer community. Trans actress Josie Toha, gay Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy, trans comedian Patti Harrison are some of the few that took part in the Capsule Collection campaign. It is fascinating how many people come forward to support a cause.
Ralph Lauren is more than just design.
Underwood continued: “The movement embodies an expression of spirit that is also very Ralph Lauren. ‘Be anything you want to be,’ as Mr. Lauren has said. ‘And be many things.’ This collection, and the flag that inspired it, demonstrates just how many things a person can be.”
This collection is not the first initiative by Ralph Lauren. The brand has a history of supporting LGBTQ community. One, they have sponsored AIDS Walk New York since 1990. To add to this, they have also partnered with many organizations which include Elton John AIDS Foundation, amfAR and many more. In March 2019, Ralph Lauren an advertisement about same sex couples for the first time. The campaign that features a lesbian couple among many other couples. It was titled “Family is who you love.”. It is a heart warming campaign that is about loving your family.
“We live in a world where the meaning of family is bigger, broader and more personal than it has ever been before.”
That is what Ralph Lauren is all about. And that is what the brand tries to convey. The advertisement was made for the New York-founded luxury brands’ spring campaign. It was the first ever commercial to have featured a lesbian couple.
apparels is something that has a huge market and is expanding by the day. What better way to portray and give support to the LGBTQ community. Various related issues can be supported by collecting a large amount of funds. Many more brands also launch LGBTQ edition collections but the campaigns run only for a short period of time. A more frequent launching of these special editions can make a huge difference to the communities.
