As we move closer to the year 2020, we have begun to see a rise in LGBT+ acceptance. More people have come out to their families, and more awareness has definitely risen in the year. But there are some parts of it that we adore more than the others. Like, a gay wedding. And when celebrities do it, it is a much bigger affair and such a source of “goals” for the community!
Over the weekend, the LGBT+ community witnessed one other wedding of such. And we are so elated and happy for this adorable couple! The soccer champions of the U.S. Women’s National Team, Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger.
Wedding bells are ringing!
The duo got married on the 28th of December, Saturday at the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, Florida. The occasion called the coming together of their families, friends, as well as their teammates. Before the wedding both of them posted pictures calling out each other and saying that it is time for them to be married. They took their fans on their journey and it is honestly such goals! Take a look at this.
According to people, the couple has been together for the past nine years! Yup, their love story dates back to 2010. They got engaged in May 2019, and only a few months later decided to say “I do”.
Soon after they won the World Cup this summer, Krieger aged 35 and Harris aged 34, came out and told the world that they were engaged. And their excitement to be married to each other split all over social media.
“This will be the first time in our relationship where all of our friends, all of our family are going to come together to be one and to celebrate us on a completely different level. I think so much of our support from our family and friends have been through soccer and this is just so much more meaningful, in my opinion, to be celebrated for love and acceptance and inclusion, that’s so major in the world we live in now,” Harris told People.
Some Social Love Spreading
Being sportswomen and speaking for the LGBT+ community has always been quite difficult. This is because of the nature of sports in itself. Athletes are often asked to keep out of these conversations. Especially when it has a political stance and the LGBT+ issue definitely has its political implications. Which makes it extremely hard to come out and claim their identity. And getting married is only harder.
And Krieger and Harris have been quite open about themselves and also supporting the LGBT+ rights. Their wedding only added momentum to their support! Harris said that their wedding presented even more of an opportunity to move the needle forward for representation.
She added, “I’m so excited to have this type of platform to have this type of visibility to be seen as a gay couple and it be accepted and it be important”.
And guess who else attended the celebration
The wedding was graced with many of Harris and Krieger’s teammates apart from their families and friends. According to the Advocate, the list included stars, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, Heather O’Reilly, Marta, Becky Sauerbrunn, Crystal Dunn, Tobin Heath, Christen Press and more.
The time between their engagement and their wedding lasted a few months long. Which is usually unheard of. But Krieger and Harris took their time getting to the altar because they wanted to do it their way. And their wedding truly stood as a testament to their love.
Harris even told Vogue, “I actually bought her ring three years ago”. She continued, “I knew I wanted to marry her, but I didn’t want it to be a traditional, conforming next step. I didn’t want to feel like I just had to do it because that’s what was next”.
“It took me a while to come to terms with what marriage looked like for us. I think it should be unique to each couple, and Ali and I spent a lot of time discussing what principles we wanted to align with and guide our way through life because it’s so challenging, and we wanted to do it once, and we want to do right by each other.”
The couple had a beautiful wedding and donned the most gorgeous outfits that shone their personalities. They even posted pictures of themselves on Instagram after the wedding and the fans are going gaga over it!
